  • Quelle quantité d'eau doit-on boire par jour ?
  • How much water should you drink per day ?

    Romain Backes

Knowing that an average-sized individual loses nearly 1.5 liters of water every day through urine and another liter through sweat, stools and breathing, It is recommended to drink between 1 L and 1.5 L of water to which is added the water from food (fruits, vegetables) which corresponds to approximately 1 L of water per day. This amount of water varies depending on where you live (in hot countries, water needs are higher), whether you are physically active, breastfeeding or ill.

3 tips for assessing your needs

    • The replacement: This involves assessing the amount of urine excreted each day (approximately 1.5 L for an adult), then adding one liter of water used for metabolism (for a person with average physical activity). The total loss amounts to 2.5 L. Knowing that the water provided by food covers approximately 20% of our needs, there remains 2 L to be consumed in the form of water, broth and other hot and cold drinks.
    • 8 glasses of water per day: Drinking 8 glasses of liquid (water, broth, etc.) per day with a capacity of 25 cl provides the equivalent of 2 liters of water.
    • Nutritional recommendations: In France, it is recommended to drink 30 ml per kilo of body weight, or between 1 and 1.5 L of water (to which is added the water contained in food). To this basic consumption, 0.5 L of water must be added for each degree above 38°C.

Recommendations of the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority)

European health authorities have established that the contribution of food to total water intake represents approximately 20% in adults. On this basis, it is estimated that men should drink approximately 2 L per day and women 1.6 L.
